about
Syrian Electronic-Folk artist Yousef Kekhia releases “Lahn al Hayat” (eng.: “The Anthem of Life”), the follow up single to his 2018 solo debut “Hal ard Lamin?” from his upcoming album “Monologue”.
“For me ‘Lahn al Hayat’ is about the idea of moving on after losing someone, this moment of grief when all hope seems to have vanished. I wrote this song I always wanted to have for myself and everyone as a pier to hold on to in times of struggle”.
Musically and lyrically Kekhia divided this intimate yet empowering anthem into two states. The mostly acoustic and very minimal beginning is about accepting the idea of death and embracing it as part of life’s beautiful nature. Whereas the song builds up with electronic elements to its climax in the second state. This part is the multi-instrumentalists’ reminiscence about the pain of having to say goodbye to loved ones in his hometown Aleppo. A pain he felt again when witnessing his girlfriends’ fathers passing in 2018 in Germany. “It was an intense experience, releasing flashbacks like doors opening up old memories. Mentally, I had to go back to Aleppo and write this song. It is this where ‘Lahn al Hayat’ found me.
lyrics
(english below)
THE ANTHEM OF LIFE
we saw it within the sun
and lived it in the ocean’s depths
death wrote of it
the anthem of life
and when the sun flickers away
and time stops dead in the cosmos
the turn will come for
the anthem of life
the smell of wet soil in the street
with a candle and silent minarets
in the moment of fear
of the anthem of life
after the silence comes the dawn
thus the bird will rise above the borders
and will repeat from above
the anthem of life

Somewhat lopsided 'best of' with almost all of Enta Fen here, but true to the description this is a good 'best of' collection. However, if you love these songs, you will likely love all 3 Soap Kills albums, and also likely Yasmine Hamdan's solo work. BeagleBay
